Cumberland Council Bin Collection Dates

Cumberland Council was formed in April 2023 as part of local government reorganisation in Cumbria, merging the former districts of Carlisle, Allerdale and Copeland into a single unitary authority. The council serves a large area of north-west England including Carlisle, Workington, Whitehaven, Maryport, Cockermouth, Cleator Moor, Egremont, Wigton and Brampton. Cumberland operates a fortnightly alternating collection system for household waste. The blue recycling bin is collected one fortnight, while the grey domestic waste bin and green garden waste bin are collected together on the alternate fortnight. This means all three bins rotate on a two-week cycle — recycling one week, then domestic waste and garden together the next. The blue recycling bin accepts paper and cardboard, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, food and drink cans, and metal tins. Materials should be clean, dry and unbagged. Contaminated or bagged recycling may be left uncollected. The grey bin is for non-recyclable domestic waste only. It should contain household rubbish that cannot be recycled, composted or taken to a recycling centre. Bagging waste inside the grey bin is recommended. The green bin is for garden and green waste, including grass cuttings, leaves, hedge trimmings, prunings, plants, weeds and flowers. No food waste, soil or rubble should be placed in the green bin.
