Westmorland and Furness Council Bin Collection Dates

Westmorland and Furness Council was formed in April 2023 as part of local government reorganisation in Cumbria, merging the former districts of South Lakeland, Eden and Barrow-in-Furness into a single unitary authority. The council covers a large area of the Lake District and surrounding towns including Barrow-in-Furness, Kendal, Ulverston, Windermere, Ambleside, Coniston, Penrith, Appleby, Grange-over-Sands, Kirkby Lonsdale, Kirkby Stephen and Milnthorpe. Because Westmorland and Furness was formed by merging three former district councils, bin collection arrangements vary across the area depending on which former district your property falls within. Recycling is collected fortnightly across the council area. General waste (grey or black bin) is collected fortnightly on the alternate week to recycling. Some areas also receive garden waste and food waste collections — these services depend on the arrangements that were in place under the former district council and may not be available at every property. The recycling bin (usually blue) accepts paper and cardboard, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, food and drink cans, and metal tins. Materials should be clean, dry and loose — do not bag recycling. The general waste bin accepts non-recyclable household waste only. Garden waste collections are available in parts of the council area. The garden waste bin accepts grass cuttings, leaves, hedge trimmings, prunings, plants, weeds and flowers. No soil, rubble or food should be placed in the garden waste bin. Food waste collections are available in some areas, using a small caddy provided by the council. The caddy accepts all food waste whether cooked or raw. No packaging should be placed in the food caddy.
