Birmingham City Council is the largest local authority in the UK, serving approximately 1.1 million residents across around 460,000 households in the West Midlands. Waste and recycling collections are operated by Serco under contract to the council. Most Birmingham households receive three separate kerbside services: a blue wheelie bin for general household waste — non-recyclable items that cannot go elsewhere — collected fortnightly; a green wheelie bin for mixed recycling including paper, cardboard, glass bottles, plastic bottles, food tins, and aerosols, collected fortnightly on alternate weeks to the blue bin; and a small green food caddy for kitchen food waste including raw and cooked food, collected weekly. A paid garden waste subscription service is available for eligible properties, collecting green-lidded brown bins fortnightly throughout the year. Bank holidays may affect collection schedules — Birmingham City Council publishes revised dates on its website ahead of bank holiday periods, and collections in an affected week are typically brought forward by one day. If a bin is missed, residents should report it within 24 hours via the council website or by calling 0121 303 1112. Note: the council's online collection checker currently only shows the household (blue bin) collection date; recycling and food caddy dates are not returned through this system. Birmingham has two Household Waste Recycling Centres: Lifford Lane in Kings Norton (B30 3PY) and Redfern Road in Tyseley (B11 2BH), both open seven days a week for bulky waste, electricals, paint, wood, garden waste outside the subscription season, and other materials not accepted at the kerbside.
Collection frequency: General waste (blue bin): fortnightly. Recycling (green bin): fortnightly, alternate weeks. Food caddy: weekly. Garden waste: fortnightly (subscription).
