About bin collections in Birmingham City Council

Birmingham City Council is the largest local authority in the UK, serving approximately 1.1 million residents across around 460,000 households in the West Midlands. Waste and recycling collections are operated by Serco under contract to the council. Bins should be presented for collection by 5:30am on your collection day and must be returned to your property by midday the following day. Full service information is at birmingham.gov.uk/bins.

Most Birmingham households receive four kerbside services. General waste (blue bin) is collected fortnightly — this covers non-recyclable items that cannot go in any other bin. Recycling (green bin) is collected fortnightly on alternating weeks to the blue bin; the green bin has a removable paper pod for cardboard and paper, and a main section for plastic bottles, pots, tubs, metal cans, aerosols, clean foil, and glass bottles and jars. Food waste (green caddy) is collected weekly and accepts all cooked and uncooked food scraps. Garden waste (brown bin with green lid) is available as a paid annual subscription service, collected fortnightly throughout the year.

If your bin is missed, report it within 24 hours at birmingham.gov.uk/bins or by calling 0121 303 1112. Bank holiday collections may be rescheduled — Birmingham City Council publishes revised dates on its website ahead of each bank holiday period, and collections in an affected week are typically brought forward by one working day.

Birmingham has two Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs): Lifford Lane HWRC in Kings Norton (B30 3PY) and Redfern Road HWRC in Tyseley (B11 2BH), both open seven days a week. These accept bulky waste, electricals, paint, wood, garden waste, and other materials not collected at the kerbside. Note: WhenBin currently shows the general waste (blue bin) collection date only — recycling and food caddy dates are not available through Birmingham's public collection checker at present.
