Liverpool City Council collects waste from around 210,000 households across the city. Liverpool is one of the few councils in England to use purple wheelie bins for general household refuse — items that cannot be recycled or composted — collected weekly on a set day that varies by street. Recycling is collected fortnightly in blue bins; accepted materials include paper and cardboard, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, tubs and trays, food tins and drink cans, and aluminium foil. Residents should rinse containers and flatten cardboard before placing them in the blue bin. A seasonal garden waste collection service is available through spring and summer using a green wheelie bin on a fortnightly basis; residents must register and subscribe with the council to receive this service, and charges may apply. Food waste — including cooked and uncooked meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, and dairy — can be placed in a brown food waste bin where the service is available at the property. Bank holiday collections may be rescheduled; Liverpool City Council publishes revised schedules online ahead of bank holidays, and affected collections are typically moved to the following working day. Missed collections should be reported within 24 hours by calling 0151 233 3001 or through the council website. Liverpool's Household Waste Recycling Centre is located at Long Lane, Fazakerley, Liverpool, L9 7BD, open seven days a week for bulky items, electricals, paint, garden waste, and other materials not collected at the kerbside.
