Bradford Council collects household waste and recycling across the Bradford Metropolitan District, covering Bradford city, Keighley, Shipley, Bingley, Ilkley and the surrounding towns and villages. Collections follow a fortnightly rolling schedule that alternates general waste and recycling, so most properties receive a collection every week.
Bradford uses a distinctive colour scheme compared to many UK councils. The green bin is for general household waste — non-recyclable items that cannot go in any other bin. The grey bin is for dry mixed recycling, including paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars, tins and cans. Both the green and grey bins are collected fortnightly on the same day of the week, alternating each fortnight so that one or the other is collected every week.
A brown bin garden waste service is available as an optional paid subscription. If you subscribe, garden waste including grass cuttings, leaves, twigs, plants and flowers is collected approximately every four weeks on a Friday. The service typically runs between March and December with a winter break. If you are not subscribed, collection dates for your area are still displayed so you can see the schedule before deciding to subscribe.
Collection days vary significantly across the Bradford district. A property in Keighley may have a completely different collection day from a property in Shipley or Bradford city centre. Even properties on the same street can occasionally fall on different rounds. Using your full postcode and selecting your specific address is the only reliable way to find your exact schedule.
The Bradford Metropolitan District covers postcodes from BD1 in the city centre to BD22 in the Haworth and Oxenhope area, as well as LS29 covering Ilkley and Addingham. Only properties within the Bradford Metropolitan District boundary are served.
Bradford Council advises all residents to have their bins out by 6am on collection day, as collections can take place at any time. On bank holidays, collections are typically moved to the following day. During the Christmas period Bradford Council publishes a revised schedule — check ahead for changes.
