Bristol City Council operates one of England's most advanced multi-stream recycling systems, separating household recyclables into three dedicated collections rather than a single mixed bin. Each stream — cardboard, cans and plastics, and mixed glass — is collected fortnightly, often on different days of the week. This approach maximises material quality and reduces contamination at processing facilities.
General household waste goes into the black 240-litre wheelie bin, collected fortnightly. Cardboard boxes and packaging go into the dedicated cardboard bin (360 litres), also collected fortnightly. Tins, cans, aerosols, foil trays, plastic bottles and rigid plastic containers go into the cans, foil and plastics bin (360 litres), fortnightly. Glass bottles and jars — rinsed clean — go into the mixed glass bin (240 litres), fortnightly. Because the three recycling streams run on different day-rotation cycles, your cardboard, glass and cans bins may be collected on different days of the week.
Garden waste is an optional subscription service, typically running from March to November. A food waste caddy service is available at some properties — contact the council to check availability at your address.
Bristol City Council does not collect on bank holidays. Collections are normally delayed by one working day for the rest of that week. An amended Christmas and New Year schedule is published annually on the Bristol City Council website.
To report a missed collection, call 0117 922 2000 or use the online form at bristol.gov.uk/bins. The main Household Waste Recycling Centre is at Days Road, St Philips, Bristol, BS2 0QS, open seven days a week. A second HWRC is at Hartcliffe Way, Bristol, BS13 0JR.
Collection frequency: Fortnightly for all streams; general waste and each recycling stream collected on separate day rotations.
