Cheshire West and Chester Council collects household waste from homes across a large unitary authority stretching from the historic city of Chester in the south, through Ellesmere Port and Northwich, to Frodsham and Winsford, serving around 160,000 households across a mix of urban areas and rural communities.
Collections run on a fortnightly alternating schedule. In one week the black bin is collected — this takes all non-recyclable household waste that cannot go in the recycling bins, including polystyrene, nappies, crisp packets and broken crockery. The lid must close fully for the crew to collect it. In the following week, both recycling bins are collected on the same day. Cheshire West operates twin-stream recycling: a blue bin for paper, cardboard, tins, cans and aerosols, and a red bin for glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and cartons. Items should be clean and empty — no need to separate materials within each bin, but do not mix the blue and red streams. Loose items only — do not bag your recycling.
Brown bins are available for garden waste on an optional subscription basis, collected fortnightly. The service accepts grass cuttings, leaves, hedge clippings, twigs and small branches. Food waste, soil and rubble must not go in the brown bin.
Collections do not take place on bank holidays. If your scheduled collection day falls on or after a bank holiday, all collections for the rest of that week are delayed by one working day. An amended schedule is published on the council website around Christmas and New Year.
To report a missed collection, contact Cheshire West and Chester on 0300 123 7036 or use the online missed collection form at cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk. Household waste recycling centres are located in Chester, Ellesmere Port, Frodsham, Northwich and Winsford — check the council website for current opening hours.
