Glasgow City Council provides household waste and recycling collections to over 300,000 properties across the city. Collections are managed by Glasgow City Council's Land and Environmental Services and operate on a rolling calendar schedule that varies by street and property type.
Glasgow operates five separate bin collections. The blue bin is collected every 28 days and accepts mixed dry recycling including paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, tins and cans. The grey bin is also collected every 28 days and is for non-recyclable general household waste only — it alternates with the blue bin so most properties receive a collection every two weeks. The brown bin is collected every 14 days and accepts food waste and garden waste including grass cuttings, leaves, twigs and plant material. The green bin is collected every 21 days and is for glass only — glass bottles and jars should be placed in the green bin rather than the blue bin. The purple bin is collected every 56 days and accepts clothing, textiles, paired shoes and household linens.
Bin collection days vary significantly across Glasgow. Properties in Dennistoun, Bridgeton and the East End may have completely different collection days from properties in Shawlands, Pollokshields or Partick, even within the same postcode. The only reliable way to find your exact collection date is to look up your individual address using your postcode.
Collections cover all residential areas within the Glasgow City Council boundary including Anderston, Baillieston, Bridgeton, Cardonald, Cathcart, Dennistoun, Drumchapel, Easterhouse, Finnieston, Govan, Govanhill, Hillhead, Ibrox, Jordanhill, Langside, Maryhill, Merchant City, Mount Florida, Partick, Pollok, Pollokshields, Possilpark, Scotstoun, Shawlands, Shettleston, Springburn, Strathbungo, Tollcross and Whiteinch. Note that the service covers the Glasgow City Council boundary only — nearby areas such as Bearsden, Milngavie, Clarkston and Barrhead are served by East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire or other councils.
On bank holidays, Glasgow City Council may adjust collection schedules. If your normal collection day falls on or shortly after a public holiday, your bin may be collected a day later than usual. Check the Glasgow City Council website for confirmed bank holiday disruption dates.
Bins should be placed at the kerbside by 7am on your collection day. Collections can take place at any time during the day.
