About bin collections in Glasgow City Council

Glasgow City Council provides household waste and recycling collections to over 300,000 properties across the city, managed by Land and Environmental Services. Glasgow runs five separate bin streams on a rolling calendar schedule — collection days vary by street and property, so looking up your individual address is essential. Full service information is at glasgow.gov.uk/bins. Bins should be out by 7am on collection day.

The blue bin is collected every 28 days for mixed dry recycling: paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, food tins, drink cans and aerosols — flatten cardboard and rinse containers. The grey bin is also collected every 28 days for non-recyclable general household waste, alternating with the blue bin so most properties receive a collection every two weeks. The brown bin is collected fortnightly (every 14 days) for food waste and garden waste: all cooked and uncooked food scraps, grass cuttings, leaves, twigs, flowers and small branches. The green bin is collected every 21 days for glass only — glass bottles and jars of all colours, rinsed clean; glass should go here, not in the blue bin. The purple bin is collected every 56 days for clothing, textiles, paired shoes and household linens.

If your bin is missed, report it within 24 hours at glasgow.gov.uk/bins or by calling 0141 287 2000. Bank holiday collections may shift by one working day — check the council website for confirmed disruption dates. Note: the service covers the Glasgow City Council boundary only. Nearby areas such as Bearsden, Milngavie and Clarkston are served by East Dunbartonshire or East Renfrewshire.

Glasgow has two Household Waste Recycling Centres: Shieldhall HWRC, 110 Shieldhall Road, G51 4JF, and Blochairn HWRC, 118 Blochairn Road, G21 2DT. Both accept bulky waste, electricals, batteries, paint, garden waste, textiles and more. Visit glasgow.gov.uk for opening hours.
