About bin collections in Liverpool City Council

Liverpool City Council collects waste from around 210,000 households across the city. Liverpool is one of the few councils in England to use purple wheelie bins for general household refuse. Collections are managed directly by the council. Full service information is at liverpool.gov.uk/bins.

Most households receive four-stream kerbside collections. The purple bin is collected weekly for general household refuse — items that cannot be recycled or composted. The blue bin is collected fortnightly for mixed recycling: paper, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, tubs and trays, food tins, drink cans, and aluminium foil — rinse containers and flatten cardboard before putting them out. A green bin for garden waste (grass cuttings, leaves, hedge trimmings, small branches) is available as a seasonal subscription service collected fortnightly; contact the council to subscribe. A brown food waste bin accepts all cooked and uncooked food scraps where the service is available at the property.

If your bin is missed, report it within 24 hours at liverpool.gov.uk/bins or by calling 0151 233 3001. Bank holiday collections may be rescheduled — revised dates are published online and affected collections typically move to the following working day.

Liverpool's Household Waste Recycling Centre is at Long Lane, Fazakerley, L9 7BD, open seven days a week for bulky items, electricals, paint, garden waste, and other materials not collected at the kerbside.
