North Lanarkshire Council provides household waste and recycling collections across the region, covering Motherwell, Coatbridge, Airdrie, Cumbernauld, Bellshill, Wishaw, Shotts and the surrounding areas. Collections are managed by North Lanarkshire Council's waste services team and operate on a rotating fortnightly or four-weekly schedule depending on bin type. North Lanarkshire operates four separate bin collections. The grey bin is for general household waste that cannot be recycled and is collected every three weeks. The blue-lidded recycling bin accepts paper, card, cans, plastic bottles and cartons and is collected fortnightly. The brown bin is for food waste and garden waste and is also collected fortnightly. A separate collection for glass, metals, plastics and cartons is made on a four-weekly basis. Collection days are on a set day of the week for each area — most areas in North Lanarkshire collect on a weekday — but the specific dates rotate and vary by street. Even properties in the same postcode can have different collection dates depending on their collection round. Using your full address is the only reliable way to find your exact bin collection schedule. North Lanarkshire Council covers a large area that includes both urban and rural communities. Properties within the council boundary include those in ML1, ML2, ML4, ML5, ML6, ML7 and parts of the G67, G68, G69 and G71 postcode districts. Properties in neighbouring South Lanarkshire, East Dunbartonshire or Glasgow postcodes may fall outside the North Lanarkshire boundary. Bins must be placed at the kerbside by 7am on your collection day. Each property is entitled to one general waste bin per collection. Bin lids must be closed and excess waste will not be collected. North Lanarkshire Council collects on public holidays except Christmas Day and New Year's Day — a festive collection message is published each December with any changes to the schedule.
