About bin collections in Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council

Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council covers a large area of south Wales, encompassing the Rhondda Fawr and Rhondda Fach valleys, the Cynon Valley, the Taff Valley and the Ely Valley. The borough's main towns include Pontypridd, Aberdare, Tonypandy, Treorchy, Ferndale, Treherbert, Mountain Ash, Abercynon, Llantrisant and Talbot Green. Bin and recycling collections are managed by RCT Council.

Rhondda Cynon Taf has one of the most comprehensive recycling services in Wales. Clear recycling bags are provided for dry recycling and are collected every week. The clear bags accept a wide range of materials including paper, cardboard, metal food and drink cans, plastic bottles and rigid plastic containers, glass bottles and jars, and drink cartons. Recycling should be clean and loose inside the bags — do not mix recycling with general waste.

Food waste is collected weekly in a food waste caddy. All food waste can be placed in the caddy, including cooked and uncooked meat, fish, dairy, fruit, vegetables and bread. Compostable liners can be requested from RCT Council.

General waste is collected in black bags on a three-weekly cycle. This extended collection interval was introduced in July 2023 in line with Welsh Government targets to increase recycling rates across Wales. A maximum of three black bags per household is collected each time. Waste that can be recycled or composted should not be placed in the black bag.

Garden waste collections are available for registered households. During summer months garden waste is collected weekly alongside your other collections. During winter months collection is by booking. The garden waste service uses green bags. If your property is registered for garden waste, it will appear in your collection schedule automatically.
